Obituary of Eve Shempp Hachmann

Evangeline S. Hachmann, 91 years, of Strongs Neck, Setauket, New York, passed on January 26, 2014, after a long struggle with a respiratory illness. Evangeline Shempp was born in Rochester, New York on October 15, 1922. She was raised in a large, loving, artistic family. Eve was a librarian and Spanish and French teacher in the New York City Public Schools for over 20 years. She was a graduate of the University of Michigan, where she met her beloved husband of 59 years, Hans G. Hachmann.She also received her Masters degree in Library Science from Queens College, New York. Eve accompanied Hans on countless world travels for the work of the Max Kade Foundation and Hans' international law career. At Hans' side, Eve was the First Lady, during the 25 years of his Presidency at the Liederkranz Club, a 167 year old music society in New York City. Eve was the President of the Damenverein, a German Women's Club. Her love of music and opera was further enriched by 50 years of season tickets at the Metropolitan Opera. Eve was also a resident of Forest Hills Gardens for 55 years. She was an active member of the Church-in-the Gardens, singing in the choir for many years, participating in theatrical performances at the Community House, working at the Church library and book fairs, and she was honored for her 50 year membership with the Women's Club of Forest Hills. Eve was a PTA President at PS 101, a Girl Scout leader and a rare, inspiring and lovely lady. She was a beautiful woman, cheerful in spirit and loved by all. Eve was a beloved Mother of Peter, Meg, Heidi and Barbara and a proud grandmother of 11 grandchildren, Patrick and Cari, Corinne, Maris, Thea and Trevor, Zeke and Bella, Nina, Camila and Lea, and 2 great grandchildren, Annike and Imogen. She was adored by all her family and friends. Donations may be made in Eve's honor for a outdoor reading garden at the Emma S. Clark Library in Setauket, 120 Main Street, Setauket, NY 11733, attention Director Ted Gutmann. Flowers, may be sent to the Fox Funeral Home, Forest Hills, NY.
