Dr. Renato A. deLeon, MD
1936 - 2025
Dr. Renato A. de Leon, 88, of Queens, NY, passed away on January 15th, 2025, after a lengthy illness. Known to his friends and colleagues as Ato, and to his family as Lolo, Dr. de Leon was the youngest and last surviving of 6 siblings. He was born in Manila, Philippines, on November 17th, 1936, and educated at the University of Santo Tomas. After receiving his MD in 1962, Renato married Elisa Sanchez in 1965, his wife of 43 years before her passing in 2008. They settled in Queens and raised two daughters, Marita and Cecilia. A physician dedicated to his profession and his patients, Renato retired after practicing medicine for many years at Creedmoor Psychiatric Hospital. He was well-respected and loved by his colleagues. He was blessed by a second marriage to his cherished Dr. Leonda Garcia, who survives him. Renato is also survived by, Marita (Matthew Lesho) and Cecilia (Thomas Ogorzalek); and grandchildren Anastasia, Adrienne, Marcus, and Gregor Lesho.
Renato’s family is so thankful for his dedication to them and to the patients he served. He was a member of a pioneering group of Filipino medical practitioners that moved to the USA in the early to mid 1960’s. He continuously educated himself and stayed current with medical practice, and even practiced in retirement due to his love for medicine. He is remembered for his devotion to his family, his sense of humor, his attention to fashion, and his love of swing and boogie music, often showing off dance moves to the delight of his friends and fellow partygoers. We will miss our Lolo Guapo!
Funeral services will be held on February 1, 2025 at 10:30 AM at Our Lady Queen of Martyrs Catholic Church, 110-06 Queens Boulevard, Forest Hills, New York 11375.
