I remember when Juandi met Aleida. Well maybe he hadn’t just met her. But he had just started speaking about her to me, to us.
He called her Chinky. Everything was Chinky this and Chinky that Chinky. Chinky. Chinky. “You guys have to meet her. We have to hang out.”
We did.
It’s been a very long time since those conversations in the early days of their relationship.
But I remember Juandi’s excitement well.
I remember their lasting happiness too.

You've always been an inspiration in my life... a role model and, especially, a ray of light, always ready with a genuine, heartfelt smile and a caring thought.
Though the distance has made communication more tedious, I'll always keep all the years in New York, being close to you, as the memories that I will truly cherish... at a Super Bowl party with the gang, getting signatures for the campaigns in Willliamsburg, hanging around Marcy Ave., dinners out with the cousins, and at all the family gatherings where it was you who always brought the joy and laughter to everyone.
But, above all, you were and always will be, my Godfather, who I love and look up to.
I thank God that my daughter Carmen had the chance to meet you and that our daughters will carry on with that Martinez family tradition which you always put into practice and were an example of... that being: La familia lo primero y siempre unida.
Carmen, your 'tía Conchi (la Curra), and Vanesa, who you spoke to and who got to know you from all the stories I proudly and lovingly told about you... we will never forget you.

I read this and it reminded me of you.
You’d always tell me that some of your fondest memories were spending the holidays at my parent’s house.
You’d go over your memories with such details.
You loved the way Sari set the dining room table on Thanksgiving , Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, New Year’s Eve… You would always compliment the way Sari decorated the house.
You loved Tia’s cooking every day of the year- not only on holidays. But yes, you gave the Noche Buena menu rave reviews. Lechón asado, arroz blanco, frijoles negros, yuca con mojo, y maduros. We would top it off with your favorite dessert, dulce de papaya con queso crema.
You would tell me for nearly every year after my father passed away how much you missed the tradition of getting together at my parent’s house for the holidays.
I forget what I said during one of our conversations, but I remember what you responded.
“I remember it a little differently. Those were the best times.”

I can hear you call my father, “Padrino”.
You used to call my mom “Tia Fredi”. But when you’d speak about her, you’d say, “My Godmother…”
When you attended the respective schools my parents taught in, everyone knew who you were.
At P.S. 23K, you were known as “Mrs. Martinez’s Godson or nephew.”
At 145K, you were known as “Mr. Martinez’s Godson or nephew.”
At Mercy College, you were known as “ El ahijado o sobrino del Dr. Martinez.”
You always let everyone know how
much you loved them.
And my parents loved you.

Juan was the kindest man I knew. I actually knew him when we were all teenagers trying to make sense of the world. He was a fine judoka! He brought peace to our crazy group and he would just take moments to just sit, smile and analyze everything and everyone around him. He loved my dad his Sensei and he made my mother laugh when they would talk on the phone. My heartfelt condolences for his passing.

Q: What was one of your favorite qualities of Juan?
A: Juan was a very special man.. He was proud as well as stubborn. He was thoughtful and placed a great deal of importance on family and friends. Juan also had a sense of humor and enjoyed laughing and joking. He will be missed a great deal by anyone who knew him. I can even now, envision him sitting on the sofa and giggling about our rat adventures. My husband, Jake, and I will miss him very much.
