Obituary of Joseph Chang

Please share a memory of Joseph to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

On the evening of March 18, 2025, Joseph C. Chang,  beloved husband, father, grandfather, uncle, granduncle, and friend to many, passed away peacefully. Joseph is survived by his wife Kay, his two sons and their wives - Eric and Jean, Tony and Millie, grandchildren Justin, Connor, and Kyra, his two nephews and their wives - Eugene and Rebecca, Joseph and Josephine, his niece Lily, and his grandnieces Tiffany and Justine and grandnephews Anthony, Sean, and Ian.

Joseph was a man of exceptional hospitality and social responsibility, embodying fairness and diplomacy in his interactions with friends and acquaintances. His generosity extended to his time and advice, and he was always willing to lend an ear and offer comfort or wisdom. These qualities proved invaluable in his successful 40+ year career in the restaurant industry.

Born on October 12, 1936, Joseph grew up in troubled times. He left conflict torn China and his mother at the early age of 9, traveling to Taiwan with his father and eventually moving alone to the United States and New York City for additional education.

During his time at the Lotus Eaters restaurant in Gramercy in the spring of 1969, Joseph met Kay, a young woman recently immigrating from Hong Kong, and their paths crossed. He offered to show her the city.  They married in October 1969 and embarked on a fulfilling journey together, building a family with the birth of Eric in 1974 and Tony two years later.

Joseph possessed a broad range of interests and a profound appreciation for the world. His refined demeanor and dignified conduct made him an admired figure.  He adored his three grandchildren and enjoyed hearing about their lives and achievements.

Despite the difficulties of recent years, Joseph found solace in spending his remaining time engaging in conversations and reminiscing with his lifelong friends. His passing will be deeply felt, but his legacy will continue to inspire and uplift those he touched.
