Oscar Emiro Fernandez, MD

March 15, 1931 - August 6, 2025

Dr. Oscar E. Fernandez (94) passed away peacefully on August 6, 2025 in his home in Forest Hills, New York.

Dr. Fernandez was born in Arjona, Colombia and  studied medicine, with a specialization in cardiology, in both Chile and Argentina before immigrating in 1965 to New York with his wife, Sara Fernandez Peña.  It was here that they built a medical practice in Elmhurst that serviced thousands in the Queens community for more than 50 years. He was honored to serve as President of the Spanish-American Medical Society for several years.  He retired at the age of 89 in March 2020, the week of the pandemic. 

Dr. Fernandez was a devoted husband and father to three children - Helen Fernandez, who followed in his footsteps to also become a physician, Carmen Romero, who learned from him the value of service to community, and Oscar Jr., who shared a love of baseball with him and now works for their favorite team, the NY Mets.

Dr. Fernandez had many incredible qualities, including his positive perspective, sense of humor, and steadfast commitment to knowledge and education. Most of all he cared deeply for his family, caring for his beloved wife, Sara, largely by himself when she passed 15 years before him. 

Dr. Fernandez and Sara lived the American Dream but he never forgot his love for Colombia, his Pueblo.

He is survived by his children - Dr. Helen Fernandez (and Rod Murphy), Carmen Romero (and Tobin Romero), and Oscar G. “Jr.”Fernandez (and Stacey Usiak) and his 7 grandchildren - Javier, Marco, Mateo, Marina, Ryan, Louisa, and Quinn.

A wake will be held at Fox Funeral Home in Forest Hills on August 29th and a funeral mass at Our Lady Queen of Martyrs at 9:30am on August 30th.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in his honor to Brookdale Department of Geriatrics and Palliative Medicine at Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai.
