Dominic Yong Fu Chien is remembered for a life lived with resilience, hard-work, selflessness and devotion to his family.
He was born in 1935, five days after the Chinese New Year, in Shanghai, China to Peter K Chien and Anna Lee Chien. In a time of immense historical significance and change in the world, life took him to Hong Kong and then Taipei, where he became the first in his family to earn a higher education degree, studying at the National University of Taiwan.
In his 20s, he had the opportunity to further his studies in the United States, where he ended up calling New York City his home for over 65 years. He became a serial entrepreneur and successful small business owner including various restaurants, a delicatessen, laundromat and a wine & spirits store before retiring at the age of 77. He was an ongoing fixture in his community, and was once affectionately called the "Mayor of Main Street & Union Turnpike."
He was also the first in his family to immigrate to the US. Although he arrived with just meager savings, he was fueled by the determination to provide for both his immediate and extended family. He achieved the American dream, and helped many others in his family do the same.
Dominic is survived by his wife of 51 years Su Lang Chang, elder sister Yun Di Chien, eldest daughter Sheila Chien, daughter Melissa Chien, and son-in-law Peter Rosell.
