The Diocese of Brooklyn/Queens had no problem drumming Msg. Dempsey out of OLQM but I never heard of an equal public exoneration.
A faithful priest he was.

Michael & I were born 1 month apart. Our fathers were first cousins and were our godfathers. We even went to St.Francis College together. He and his mom Catherine and brother Bob were always part of our lives growing up. After Lois and I married, he became even more important to us, baptizing our 6 children, marrying them, and then baptizing our 23 grandchildren. Along the way, he blessed us on numerous anniversaries by repeating our wedding vows with us. He was always there to help us celebrate any good occasion, and add strength when times called for it. Sweet, gentle, always interested in what the young people were up to or in to - always a loving presence in our lives. We will always miss you and think of you now in Paradise , earning your just reward. John and Lois McDonald

To the Family of Rev. Msgr. Michael Dempsey:
I knew Msgr. Dempsey from his days at Our Lady Queen of Martyrs and always enjoyed hearing his homilies. I hope you are being comforted by the expressions of sympathy you are receiving from his friends and all those whom he inspired. I pray that Almighty God in His infinite mercy will embrace his son Michael as a servant who, while wounded, touched many souls entrusted to his ministry.

My husband and I met Fr. Michael about 50 years ago when he officiated at his brother Bob's Marriage to Jim's sister, Anne Marie Browne. Since then we have been with Michael at countless family celebrations and holiday dinners, many hosted by the Browne family. Even though Bob is our brother-in-law, Michael was part of the package and we consider him our brother-in-law also.
Michael has always been our family priest which has included Baptisms, weddings, funerals, etc. over these many years. The last few years, Michael's ministry has been visiting the sick and elderly in hospitals and nursing homes. It was an obvious fit. We watched him caring for his elderly mother and being kind and caring to our mothers and father as they aged.
At our family dinners, Michael said the grace before meals and then expounded on the theology of Christmas and/or Easter or gave warm personal wishes on the other occasions. We always loved Michael's loud, almost raucous laugh when something tickled his funny bone. It was always a surprising difference from his somewhat serous manner. Our children and grandchildren will miss his genuine interest in their lives.
We last saw Michael at his niece, and our niece, Kara's Christening of her second son, Daniel Patrick, recently. Daniel's older brother Liam held the prayer book for Fr. Michael. Our daughter Colleen and her husband Mike were the godparents. Our two other daughters, Patti Ann and Mary Lou, attended with their husbands, and of course the grandparents, Bob and Ollie. It was a special day for all of us to remember always.
The people who Fr. Michael ministered to every day for the last years will miss his warm, caring, prayerful ways. And we, his family and friends will miss him, and we will say the grace before meals with a special prayer for Michael at each event. May God bless him and give him a grand Irish welcome to heaven.

We will miss Father Michael very much. He had such a kind, gentle, inquisitive presence at all of our family events. He lived Jesus' message of compassion and he was always the person reaching out to whoever was going through something. The last time I saw him was just a couple of months ago when he baptized my cousin's son. It is a lovely memory I will cherish. May he rest in peace.

I have many fond memories of Msgr. Dempsey. He washed my feet on Holy Thursday of 2002; I joined him on a pilgrimage to Poland; I attended his Bible classes; I went on a night time tour he conducted of our beautiful church; and it was on his advice that in 2011, I booked my amazing vacation to Iceland.
I always loved when Msgr. Dempsey celebrated Mass. He would begin with a sermonette, which included guidelines for using the day's readings for prayer and meditation to prepare us for the reception of Holy Communion. His homilies were spiritual food for thought. To this day, I often quote them and reflect upon them.
After his retirement from the active priesthood, he and I remained in touch by exchanging cards and letters.
I shall miss him terribly!

A true faithful servant & defender of our church community and a persistent seeker of the truth. Though our friendship was in later life, he left an impact on my faith and will be dearly missed. I feel privileged to be befriended by him and to be the recipient of his care, attentive understanding and wisdom.

I attended OLQM Church for years before I moved to the parish 29 years ago. Father Dempsey gave the most inspiring homilies. Each time I heard him there was something meaningful for me. I appreciated that he treated us, the congregation, as if we were as intelligent as he.
May God bless him.

Monsignor was a blessing to my life. And even when times were rough, he continued to minister in whatever way he could. He touched my life in a wonderful way, and I will always be grateful for his counsel, his wisdom, and his compassion. We kept each other up to date even when we were unable to see each other. He was, for me, truly a priest. One of God's own. I am sure he is looking down over us all. I KNOW he went straight to Heaven.
