Obituary of John Gmerek
John Gmerek - Born February 16,1924, passed away peacefully on January 6,2018 at the age of 93. John was born in Buffalo, New York. He served in the Army in World War II. He returned to Buffalo and after graduating from the University of Buffalo he had a long career with the FBI as an investigator. He settled in New York City where he met his wife Patricia.
He was very proud of his Polish heritage and belonged to several organizations including the Kosciuszko Foundation, the Polish American Congress and he was chairman of the Polish/Jewish Holocaust Studies Organization. He founded the University of Buffalo NYC alumni chapter where he served as president for ten years during the 1980's. He was also very active in this community as a member of the Forest Hills Men's Club. He was dedicated and his leadership inspired many others. John was also a big sports fan who loved his NY Mets and Buffalo Bills. John is survived by his wife Patricia and children Joseph, Jean and Sue (deceased).
Visiting Hours will be Tuesday January 9th from 2-5 and 7-9.
Funeral Mass will be Wednesday January 10th at 9:30am at Our Lady Queen of Martyrs Roman Catholic Church. Burial will follow at Calverton National Cemetery, Calverton, New York.
