Jennie Lorenzo

Obituary of Jennie Lorenzo

Please share a memory of Jennie to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Jennie Lorenzo a beloved mother, adored grandmother and great-grandmother, gracefully passed away from this earth on August 25th, 2023.

Jennie was born in Santurce, Puerto Rico on March 8, 1927. She arrived in New York City in 1936 during the peak of the Great Depression with her eldest sister Mercedes Padilla who preceded her in death. The rest of the family joined them shortly after their arrival in New York City.  Jennie continued to live in NYC the remainder of her life, however, her love and dedication to "her Island"  that she left behind was always ever present. Jennie adored all things related to her tropical birthplace from the call of its warm waters, its sweet fruits, the melodies of music that brought her never ending joy, dancing and and of course - all the food!

Throughout her life, she made friends everywhere she went. During long hours working at Emerson and other early electronics factories, she found time to enjoy parties with her co-workers after hours and forged friendships that lasted for decades. She lived in the same apartment on Roosevelt Ave for over 50 years, and Miss Jennie was a beloved fixture in the building. As the friends of her youth passed on, she made new connections with the communities of her children and grandchildren. She was always ready to sing, dance, or don a silly hat. Even in the final years of her life, she still regaled her court with tales of dancing at The Palladium in the late 40s, during the era of live performances by Tito Puente. Music and dancing were central to her enjoyment of life, and she could often be found giving dance lessons to friends decades her junior, or spontaneously bursting into a capella "I've Got You Under My Skin" or other Frank Sinatra tunes.

She brought into this world and is survived by two children, Louis Otero ("Louie") and Roseanna Gutierrez  whom she adored and remained close with throughout her life.  Jennie was also cherished by her five grandchildren, Yesenia Gutierrez, Hillary Otero, Erica Otero Vargas, Eric Otero and Rachel DiSalvo and three great-grandchildren. Nothing was more important to Jennie than her family.  Jennie was well-known as the nurturing care-taker and matriarch of the family. In her younger years, her home was the center of all holiday gatherings where she joyfully cooked food, played music and brought a spirit of togetherness.  Her home was the place that everyone wanted to be.  There was always room for one more at Grandma Jennie's and guests were always welcome at these gatherings.

Let us come together and celebrate the life and love of Jennie Lorenzo on August 29, 2023. She will be missed and treasured always, those we love don't leave us but instead continue to walk beside us.
