Obituary of John J. Garrett

John Joseph Garrett, III died peacefully in his home on May 21, 2018 due to complications related to Type 1 diabetes. He was 53 years old.

John was born on June 18, 1964 to his parents, John Joseph Jr. and Ginger Garrett (nee Galvin). He grew up in Forest Hills, New York, where he also resided for most of his adult life. He attended Holy Cross High School and the University of Delaware. He was an independent contractor and general manager of Brandywine Construction, building many local bars and restaurants and known for his beautiful, artistic carpentry. He was also a partner in the family-owned restaurant, Mara’s, in Glen Cove, NY.

John was an avid sailor, a lover of fine wines, and a proud cyclist of vintage bikes, preferably red. He was a beloved member of the extended family of Nancy and Bill, Kathy and Stan, Mary and Dave and Michael and Lee and a favorite uncle to Colin, Maya, Sean XiaoKang, Ella and Christopher.  He was a neighbor and cherished friend to many in Forest Hills, NY and in his beloved summer community of Point Lookout, NY. He is preceded in death by his parents.

Visiting hours are on Saturday, June 2 from 2pm - 6pm at Fox Funeral Home, 98-07 Ascan Avenue, Forest Hills, NY 11375. A celebration of John’s life will take place on Sunday, June 3 from 12pm - 3pm at the Buoy Bar, 72 Bayside Drive, Point Lookout, NY 11569.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation or to The Long Island Toy Lending Center, which is a local Point Lookout charity supported by The Point Lookout Yacht Club, of which John was a proud member.
