What I remember most about John, or Mr Rowan as I called him was how much he loved his family and how much they loved him too.

We became family November 8, 1997 when Andrea and Jim got married. Since then we have spent many wonderful times together. The birth of our grandsons. There were many baseball and hockey games we went to. Thanksgiving was special to us as we enjoyed being together in Greenport.
John was a quiet man who loved his family. You will be missed but not forgotten.
Our hearts go out to Diane, Andrea, Alyson, John for here is where John’s family started.
He is now in heaven watching over everyone.
We will always remember John,
Bob and Rosemary Gardener

Growing up it was always the 10 of us, both families doing everything together. As we got older, Aunt Diane and Uncle John still included me in their family fun. Cape Code, California, dinners, I was always welcome. I have so many wonderful memories of all these times together. Uncle John was the sweetest, kindness, gentlest of us all, he went along with all the craziness with a smile. He will be greatly missed. I am sure Grandma had a crumb cake waiting for you.
Love you always,
Kirsten

To begin with, we were raised in a close-knit family on our mother's side. We would have parties celebrating everything, from birthdays to losing a tooth. There must have been at least 10 parties every month. Growing up, the two parties that stand out are Christmas Eve and John's Birthday. Christmas Eve is one that has continued to this day. For John's birthday, being close to Halloween, there was a special cake for the day. It was a two layered cake with cream in the middle filled with little toys. Just like the little rascals episode, every piece of cake had some toy. If this was today, we would probably be sent to foster care.
Through the years John and I lived at three different addresses: two in Brooklyn (511A Monroe St. and 1397 Gates Ave) and one in Queens (8431 90th Street). Our two big interests were playing Cowboys and Indians and sports. We both had our little guns that we filled with the red spools of caps and shot the bad guys. Our favorite cowboys included the Lone Ranger, Roy Rogers, Gene Autry, Hopalong Cassidy and Randolf Scott. I think it was Thursday nights, our landlord on Monroe St, let us watch the Lone Ranger on TV with his kids, because we didn't have a TV ourselves.
I remember our mother had a part time sewing job on St. Nicholas Ave in Brooklyn. John and I spent many hours playing punch ball, stickball, etc. in that neighborhood on Harman St. Since we were the two best players, when sides were chosen we were never on the same side. However, the last time we played a game, was at a party for Elena. There we played cornhole, with I think, Al and Mike. This time I was lucky to be on John's side.
Happy trails Brother, until we meet again. Love Tom

On Saturday morning September 7, I woke up a married woman and by the evening I was a widow.
The love of my life and heart crossed over. He is no longer in pain, but the pain I feel will be with me always.
Love one another always for we do not know what a day May bring. Laugh each day over something silly and pray each day a prayer of thanks for life.
In memory of my John, of a life well lived. Always and forever, Diane.

In our family our aunts/uncles and cousins were more like an extension of our immediate family. John was a kind and patient person who will be missed terribly. Keep the party going and I'm sure Aunt Gerry will have a goodie bag waiting. Love always

John will always be one of my 'big cousins' who took the time out to have a catch or play ball with me. Running bases was another favorite that we would play at the family picnics, with John always being a part of it. We will miss you dearly John - rest in peace.

I am so blessed to have had Uncle John in my life. From my earliest memories of going to Indian Mountain Lake together to our last trip together to Texas, he always made our time together wonderful. I loved talking about the cowboy tv shows and movies we both watched. Also, grandma used to tell me, when I was doing something a bit dangerous or risky, that I was so much like Uncle John. He was the same. When grandma told me he had a motorcycle when he was younger, I knew I needed one too. What fun is life without risk. He was always interested in what I had going on in my life and he always made sure to tell me how proud he was of me and that I was loved. I will always held that dear. I love him and all my family. He will always be with me until we meet again.

John lived his life as a man of Faith, who loved his Family so dearly. It was never about “him”, but about his children and grandchildren. We will remember John’s kindness towards us, his calm ways and his love of sports, especially his Mets!
So glad we got to spend time with him and Diane in the Holy Land in early February 2020 and our evening Irish Mist toasts. Rest in peace, John. You’ve earned it!
